Pleioblastus humilis - Green leaves and about six inches high in the sun, and grows to two feet in the shade. Take your choice. Root-hardy to at least -15°F but loses its leaves in the winter here in Zone 5. Good as a ground cover and for erosion control. Four inch pot.

Pleioblastus shibuyanus ‘Tsuboi’ – A small (two to three feet) bamboo with unique variegation; the mid-vein is always white. This is a very attractive plant that captivates people when they see it in the nursery. Excellent as an interior plant or accent plant in the garden. While it is hardy to at least -15°F it does lose its leaves each winter here in Massachusetts. Four inch pot.

Pleioblastus simonii – A useful and handsome garden or interior plant. Straight culms with long, thin, green leaves. The reference books give its maximum height as 20 feet. It has never grown taller than 18 inches here. Easy as a houseplant about one foot high. We sell our selection grown from seed. I grow one in a shallow bonsai pot, the soil covered with moss. Four inch pot.

Pleioblastus viridistriatus – Yellow-green leaves with green variegation and fine hairs on the leaves.You’ll enjoy the golden glow from this plant. Superb groundcover. A nationally known nursery sells this as a non-invasive bamboo. I’m telling you that it is a vigorous runner! It will grow in half sun but the colors are more vivid in full sun. Four inch pot.

Pseudosasa owatarii - About six inches tall here in Zone 5. Probably the smallest of all the bamboos and an elegant bamboo prized for growing as a bonsai.This comes from the Japanese island of Yakushima and is perfectly hardy here. Takes a while to become established but with its small, pointed leaves it is a welcome addition to the edge of a perennial or bamboo planting.  Four inch pot.

Sasa senanensis – With large, deep green leaves, this graceful bamboo makes an excellent evergreen (down to -20F) screen up to eleven feet. This is a slow runner, very easy to control. Shade or sun. These plants come from a grove at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum where it competes successfully with Norway maples! Runs, but runs slowly. Six inch pots.

Sasa veitchii - SILVER-EDGE BAMBOO (KUMA-ZASA) – A superb groundcover.
