Burt Associates Clivia
Clivia miniata is an outstanding houseplant; easy to grow, needs little care and flowers late winter. We offer variegated plants that are decorative even when they are not flowering. The most common Clivias have orange flowers with yellow throats. While yellow-flowered Clivias have become widely available recently, variegated Clivias remain rare and desireable. The combination of yellow flowers and variegated leaves is very rare. About half of the seedling we offer will provide this combination. Clivia is related to the common Amaryllis. However, unlike Amaryllis, Clivia retains its foliage year round and is thus a valuable and decorative houseplant
We have been breeding variegated Clivia miniata for eighteen years for local sale and now offer some of our stock on the net. These variegated plants are in their third year at the 4 - 6 leaf stage and cost $45. Some of these will produce the extremely rare yellow-flowered variegated Clivia. As not all seeds yield variegated plants buying young plants assures that you have a variegted plant at the lowest possible cost. We send all plants bare root. Just pot them up in a well-drained potting mix. These canl flower in one or two more growing seasons.
Here are some cultural points.
Full sun will burn the leaves. They need some shade and require far less sun than most flowering plants. If you keep them at room temperature and water them year round they will grow into lovely plants, but they will not flower. Inducing them to flower is easy. In the Fall and Winter keep them cool (below 65F but above freezing). Keep them dry to interrupt the growth cycle and initiate bud formation. I do this from November until January giving water about once a month. Then water less sparingly until flower buds appear after which they can be displayed anywhere. They are a very welcome sight in late Winter.
Seeds for variegated plants are obtained by pollinating the flowers borne on variegated plants. The pod parent must be variegated. Seeds (not all of which will produce variegated plants) take about one year to mature. Plants bloom in 4-5 years depending upon the quality of the culture. Germination is just about 100% . So the process is simple - but you must have a variegated plant to begin with. All you want to know about Clivia culture can be found at Shields Garden .
